UOPG Question of The Week - 03/11/03
Since all of us been affected in one way or the other (Mage, Bard, warrior,
tamer, PvP-wise and PvM) with AoS, what has changed for you?
Whats good/bad? Which skill did you drop and why?
Hasta.

Well
Ive found that my GM Smith Tailor Carpenter who use to just sit there and
collect dust cause i was SOOOO lazy to try and make money with him now
brings in the riches for me with these new enhancing things
I use to Solo everything monster wise IF i even bothered to go PvM now I
find myself in Doom getting loads of Magickal Items and gold super easy
with the occasional dieing twenty times in under 10minutes Not counting the
gold I bring in I get so many good items I sell them off my vendors and I
have about 330 luck on my mage/necro and he is my pvm/pvp charecter. Also
my Macer that I have I now put to work on the liche/liche lords in Ilsh
with his undead slaying weapons he totals them instantly and brings in more
cash
Finally my lazy ass is becoming pretty good with gold I own two 18x18 plots
and Im quite happy most of the time untill the bugs start kicking me in the
face
Pvpwise Ive been doing it ever since I started when T2A opened up I got the
tank mage dueling down really good back then and they changed it and kicked
me in the face I got up brushed myself off and worked on my pvp again
finally I got good at it again and they kicked me in the face so now Im
here pvping with Necromancy on my side which is very nice Iam enjoying the
fighting now I have a lot more fun much more a variety on my mage
Bad=All the bugs that came in with this patch and the way the monsters cast
there spells from two screen away especially Exp FS FS!!!
Good=All there new stuff seems great and it will be even better when they
finally fix all the bugs

now a stealthy stealing lock picking dungeon mage... I hated it at first...
but 8 candles 6 rocks, a standard, 2 hides...and a titans hammer later... I
am ok with it!

changes
with this new expansion came, for me, a new account and the cancelation of
my old one... ive been working up a few characters just to get started,
mainly my crafter, because after i get him up and running, it'll be easy to
supply any warriors i make... so far ill have a crafter, same as before
(non-aos), 2 mages, 1 a bard one a necromancer, then my 2 warriors... the
first one, depending on how he turns out (pk or not), will determine if im
gona make a paladin... all i have to decide for him is which fighting skill
to take up, archery or fencing... and the last will probably be a thief...
a rare hunter so to speak, now with all the little pretty uber weapons in
doom, ill need a way to get my hands on em without spending millions like
people at brit bank do... and unlike them, ill be using mine ^_^... so i
basicly have everything worked out except that fighting skill..... aos,
with all the new systems/weapons/resist/ect... have made it harder for me
to decide exactly what i want to do with my characters... sometimes 5 just
isnt enough...
so lets see... good things: a chance to start over (new account, new house,
new characters)
bad things: ive been sooo lagged that i cant really do anything except sit
around and craft stuff... which isnt TOO bad... untill i go to sell the
stuff i make... i seem to be getting extream lag when i open up sell
windows with vendors...
with warriors now, the chivalry skill takes away the need for healing and
magery... because you have your heal/cure, and recall in 1... so thats a
nice addition in my book...
ps (this to Nieves): ive been working bowcrafting recently, and since new
weapons can be crafted with that skill, i think the skill training for it
should be updated, although it isnt a big change, it goes like this now,
from what ive been doin...
0-30 npc
30-60 bow
60-70 xbow
70-80 composite bow
80-90 heavy xbow
90-GM repeating xbow
... im also keepin tabs on how much wood its takin me, im currently on the
up side of composite bows, but if ya want those i can get em to ya as i get
em... =/ just a friendly suggestion

Well I tried asking around for advice here, but no one bothered to reply to
any of my posts, so I said fuck it and experimented on my own...
Focus = a waste of skill points.
Resisting Spells = exactly what spells is this supposed to "resist"?
Tossed out those two pieces of shit skills and added Musicianship and
Peacemaking. Now when I go to Shame and see warriors running from a horde
of earth elementals, I laugh because I can take on the whole lot o' them
solo
My GM crafter gets piss poor rewards from medium-difficulty BODs. A few
hundred gold, a pickaxe/prospector's tool, ugly cloth and a piss poor
amount of fame. Monsters also drop way less loot than they used to,
although they seem to be 2x tougher. Wtf?
The game needs work, that's all I can say. If O$I think they're done, they
are dead wrong.

xbow.......................pre-cast explode /poison /bow shot = you are
dead........ .............btw thats also coupled with damage modifing rings
and braclets on melee and magic....that = uber l33t damage
hmmmmmm, does anyone know if "mage armor" comes with luck ever? it would be
really great to get a nice suit of mage armored luck items, basically
because its really annoying takeing off my armor to meditate and puting it
back on so that i can kill the monster with my luck on.
I had quit UO for a bit before AOS came out, but i came back to try it out
and see what is was like and after getting the hang of it, i think this has
been a pretty good expansion, i was very pestimistic at first. Lagg? very
rarely, i notice its usually only in town, i hardly ever experience any
lagg in dungeons, except for a burp here and there(kinda annoying when you
got a balron next to ya) ......
i have the usual gm everything crafter, but i havent used him since AOS,
but i plan too as soon as i can get a +20 smith and +20 tailoring
scroll............then ill start collecting leather and ingots and let the
imbueing begin on all the awsome Uber l33t items ive gotten so far.

Makavelli, do you find your arrows are firing during spell casting or only
after casting and/or releasing of spell? I can imagine the free damage
spewing from you if you never have to drop bow. This is tempting me. Many

Well, I have to say that the bugs, reverts, and connectivity have been alot
worse then I was expecting. It really ruined alot of nights during the
first two weeks and still continues to show itself occasionally. Nothing
is worse then feeling like you had ZERO chance to escape death, lose stuff,
etc. NO "gift" can replace a pscroll vendor lose due to a revert, ENTIRE
lost backpack, lost home due to condemned status due to previous owner
upgrading, etc.
That being said, I like most of AoS ALOT. I like Item properties and the
depth they bring. I love the WIDE variety of templates. I like the nod
given to the crafting system that gives so much depth. I like the gold
sinks. I like the danger in Felucca again.
What concerns me? I CANNOT pvp on dialup. In the past I could always stay
alive, but never finish people that fled offscreen. Now that PVM is a
must, I am finding it nearly impossible to PVM on dialup with FULLY
developed chars. Atleast I can putz around with my crafter, trying to
prep my chars, sort, organize and enhance loot, work on rune library and
such, but that can get old fast. I am just doing "chores" til I get on
faster connection, the time sI am able to, each week. I usually end up
playing something other then UO.
What would I like to see tweaked? Resist. I would like to see the Resist
Skill stand for something, even if it means one point of resist in each
area, each 10 points of resist skill. Something...anything. I like the
new consistancy of damage but do not enjoy the unexpected, extreme damage
taken at Champ spawns, SCREENS away. In pvp, I have little to complain
about...I know what to expect. Special blows can be a bitch, but I see a
balance now between mages and dexers.
Overall, I do not want to HAVE TO pvm for weeks and monthes to build a
suitable resist suit and get suitable weapon. Things should be balanced
NOW, giving the slight edge to people who put the time and effort into
giving themselves a SLIGHT edge.

I'm loving the new items...
My parryer has +-60% resist in each with a full set of Enhanced Invulns
(different colors, he looks funky but I wish there were neon ingots rofl).
My Scribe Mage is set with a full set of Luck Armor (some of which mage
armor so yes u can find mage armor with luck), only at 700 now, but going
up steadily. Love the fact I dropped hiding for focus, I'm gaining mana so
fast I'm hardly ever low
My LJ has a funky Neon GM MADE (I think runics give the ability to enhance
elemental damage or sumthin??) Double Axe, which is fun in PvM and PvP
(still mindless swinging in PvP if u ask me).
My Poison Alchy Mage heals for 60hp with GHeals Gotta love
those rings and bracelets Oh and Poison is even nicer now
My Thief Fencer is now my Necro Fencer PK, the Lance is overpowered... But
he's fun nonetheless. Kinda crappy how there's nothing much to loot
nowadays though :/
Conclusion: PvM is more fun for PvP based chars as it was before, where
only Tamers and Bards really shined (ok they still do, but now we can
almost compete ) ...
Looting is like recieving little presents when you've got high luck, its
really fun hehe Although you also often get the Chaos Loot-first situations where
there's 4 people casting EVs on OLs
I'm loving AoS, and the house designing is pretty nifty too, although I'd
wish some people would hire some adapt house designers
The only skills I've dropped were Healing for chivalry, and some Elder
skills on my warriors (ie: resist to GM) to pick up a little Focus.

The biggest effect on me has been lag and treasure hunting.
My team mate and I used to rock lvl 4 maps no problem. We just got lvl 5
lockpickers right after AoS but NO WAY are we doing lvl 5 maps till the lag
works out.
I also used to spend a lot of time doing chests (for skill and loot) now
chests hardly give any gold and the magic seems far and few inbetween.
I am still not seeing any growth in the merchant area like others are say
they are seeing.
I will not drop any skills until I know better as to what is going on.
In general the main thing AoS has made me change is the amount of time I
play. I used to play 20 hours or so a week now I’m down to about 6 hours.
This is mainly due to lag on GL. I am getting back into playing Siege as a
result of this though.

Changes
Biggest change was on my swords/eval pvp hybrid. Tried magery with the Eval
changes but in the end, iI decided I like the combat moves on my broad
better so I dropped eval for parrying. It's okay, but I'm finding magery
only good for gate/recal, cures, and healing. All bless every does is raise
my dex 1 point for 15 seconds (bug?). So now I'm thinking of dropping
magery for chivary or necromancy (which is better?) Gotta hate the ammount
of stamina you lose when you take damage and the gold on monster being
halfed.

Awsome on mage suits haveing luck.
and i find that during combat, my arrows will fire before and after i cast,
but if i start casting during the flight of the arrow, the actual damage
wont be applied till right after im done casting..........which you can
work into some nasty combos.....

My Paladin stomps all monsters with the greatest of ease. He kills Lich
Lords in 3 hits, and other monsters fall in the same fashion. He is my main
collector of necro regs (5k+ each reg atm) and my guild loves him for it. I
will keep healing as it is still effective (resing with chivalry knocks u
to 1-2hp mana and stam) and since resist is useless I didnt bother to trian
that on him.
My tamer does fairly ok but if too many monsters gang on my pets drop to
dangerous health levels. Pretty bad that my white wyrm is no longer as
powerful as my dragon due to his fire resist.
I haven't tried out my Nox Mage mainly because I am trying to get him some
fairly decent mage armor without spending a fortune. I hate people who
think just because an item is new it is expensive (ie. beetles used to be
50k just b/c they were new)
My crafter hasn't seen new business but bod rewards are worth less (not
worthless) now. Clothing Bless Deeds which you can actually get now are
impossible to sell thanks to insurance. Other than that I am glad I only
have to fill one bod to get fire (blaze) cloth instead of hunting down 4-5
bods for the LBod. I would like to know what bod/Lbod gives sandals as
reward now though.
My warrior has a lot of modifying to do now. He has two weapons skills but
with "use best weapon" I do not know if I should drop one or not. Also
Resist is absolutely useless now and I need to drop it but will wait until
all dust has settled in hopes that this pain-in-the-ass of a skill will
remain useful. OSI will be the biggest fucks ever if they make one of the
most difficult and desired skills worthless as the armor my warrior is
currently wearing.
Bad - Resist was a good thing, A GOOD THING. Why did they fuck with it?;
Lag is horrible, bugs are worse; Housing was done in one of the most
idiotic fashions in a long time, 40,000 7x7 homes maybe if everyone lined
them up perfectly. OSI put our hopes up for new housing and what happens?
Assholes buy several accts, actually manage to register, and place 18x18's
and sell them. The homeless remain homeless. I estimate 500-600 accts will
be canceled across the shards once all houses are sold in Malas; Mages are
on the down side of the PvP scale until mage armor becomes more
abundant.
Good - Item properties are nice; House designs are a god sent, even if many
houses are an eye sore; The Doom Gauntlet puts meaning to large guilds and
extreme hunters; New monsters are always fun; the new professions are nice
(but I wish they would have started focus off locked, all my chars gained a
few points upon logging on) ; PvM is more challenging for tamers and bards
I suppose, which is good because they have it easy (including my tamer) ;
Warriors are more important in dungeons now; Eye candy galore, sure its
worthless but people don't know that

56K can't handle AoS...almost unplayable for me on LS .The first 2 weeks I
was black-holed got pretty much disgusted with the game right there.
Cancelled 1 account .
The changes for Tamers do make things more interesting , you gotta
stay on your toes these days !"All kill" and loot...that got boring fast.
So I think thats pretty good.
With the rest im still rather unsure..I haven't changed any templates
yet sorta waiting on the soulstones and cable ...Call me lazy hehe

Whats changed? Everything
Whats changed for me? Well Ive played UO since the begining and have
always hated it up on my dialup connection. Since I cant afford DSL or any
other High speed connections, it makes it very hard to PvP (well expect at
work =)
What I have noticed as a big change for me is that people with good
connections dont always have the upper hand anymore....a mortal strike from
a Vanq or "35%" xbow does a considerable amount of damage which tends to
shock whoever recieves it (most times Ive hit for around 55-65 damage) and
when the person cant heal for 5 seconds after I get another shot and a
possible two hit kill.......very nice.
Also Im debating if resisting spells if even usefull anymore and wondering
if its useful to take up 100 of my skill points for it....maybe posioning
would be better.....? Any thoughts?

Once that mage figures out you don't have resist, curse and mana vamp
become very important....
As far as Neons, sometimes you will make a neon weapon when crafting from a
runic. I myself have made about 10. Sucks when they break from enhancing,
but oh well.

Thoughts on AoS:
chivalry - the skill the warriors always needed
finally something that lets us recall, heal, and do more damage, without
any other skills needed besides karma. The only problem is none of us have
enough mana (or at least I don't) to use it as a primary healer, so I ended
up keeping healing and dropping my resist (which I JUST Gm'd too : ( ... )
but now I can heal very fast if necessary, and also have healing endurance,
and with proper equipment I can massacre most creatures. All those EVing
mages or bards have nothing on slayer weapon+consecrate weapon+enemy of
one. At least, I should say, you're Joe average Provoke/EVer and a fighter
who actually knows what he's doing. I'm sure there are bards out there who
milk their skill like masters, and there are plenty of warriors who are
getting hosed and complaining about the changes, but I'm having great
success in that department with my main PVMer.
I also like how the increased lethality makes pvp a little bit more
interesting for fighters too. Don't have to hit that mage half a dozen
times any more The variety of special weapons helps too. My biggest complaint
in this department is the requirement for specially formated armor in order
to be competitive. I can't afford to insure all 6 pieces of my armor, but
if I don't wear good stuff, any idiot can e-bolt me to death in 3 spells,
now that resist is useless against damage. I'm not sure if the end result
requires pvpers to have more skill/connection speed or not. I've never
been much of a pvp seeker, but I refuse to leave my facet and hunt in Tram
just because murderers think they have a right to harass and kill people,
so chivalry suits me well, since I can recall at a sprint now.
Enhancing is too damn hard to succeed at. For some reason the tailored
items are so much easier to enhance than the metal ones. With 110
blacksmithy I still fail most of the metal enhancements, whereas I have an
entire enhanced bone armor suit with like 700+ luck already, and only one
metal item in the lot, despite finding far more metal luck items on
critters. The whole idea of luck irritates me, because as a fighter, my
life and death depends on the quality of my armor. I don't have a dragon
to hide behind, or even any kind of ranged attack to prevent me from
getting beat on. In order for me to get good items more often, I have to
have more luck (supposedly), and in order for me to not DIE more often, I
need to have better armor, but good luck armor with decent resists is hard
to come by. I made a nice gold chainmail suit with a copper runic hammer
that turned out pretty decent, and I find 265 luck is about as effective as
700 goes as far as quality goes have yet to find anything decent while wearing
an insane luck suit (but of course, have killed far less in it as well).
I'm also irritated that with the introduction of focus, stamina regenerates
much slower without it, essentially requiring fighters to have or carry
lots of refresh pots. Combined with the high mana requirements for special
moves and the mana cost of chivalry spells, I don't really have any choice
about getting focus. This irritation is compounded by the adherance to the
old mana calculation. I was pissed when hp changed to str/2 + 50, since
that means with 125 str, I have 12 less hp than someone with 125 mana has
mana. It was all right though, because I didn't need mana, but now I need
mana AND hp, just like a mage needs mana AND hp, but mana still uses it's
same old calculation. So while mages out there can (fairly) safely ditch
all of their dex, in order to remain a viable character, I have to split up
my attributes amongst all three areas (though if I could ever get enough
money to buy one of those outrageously priced power scrolls it'd be a
little more even).
Magic resist changes are pretty dumb so far, but I will have to wait and
see how pvp changes because of it. Where it stands right now, I can't see
anyone keeping resist, but that's only because not everyone is fully aware
of how crippling mana vampire and paralyze are now. (as well as curse for
that matter) In pvm it's already pissing the hell out of me.. getting
paralyzed by a lich, and then just standing next to him unable to swing and
kill him before he hits me with his next spell. Getting incessantly cursed
for -17 str (sure to increase as my resist drops even further). Sure, the
skill I traded it for (chivalry) has remove curse.. for 20 goddamn mana..
that's half my total mana! I can't afford to cast that every single time I
get cursed by a critter (since I have few mana to begin with, and battle
focus is pathetically slow at mana regen compared to med). I'm kind of
stuck at an empass.. if I drop healing for chivalry, I rely on having even
more mana to heal myself more, requiring myself to get even more int and
lowering my combat skills. I also take mana away that I could be using for
special moves or other chivalry powers. If I drop focus for chivalry I'll
have the best of everything.. resist.. healing.. all the benefits of
chivalry.. but no mana with which to use them. If I don't get chivalry,
then I can't recall, lose huge damage output bonuses, and have no fast way
of dealing with damage or poison. What else am I left with? parry? like
I'm going to drop that now? I dont think so.. so I end up dropping resist,
and now I have to put up with all these irritating spells, that just aren't
worth 100 skill points to defend against until people start putting them to
more use. As a parry warrior, I just don't quite have enough skill points
still.
Ok, I'm done Most of my other characters weren't really affected, though I do
like shadow strike and infectious strike for my ninja. I just wish there
were some decent sword weapons to inflict them with. I just don't feel up
to dropping GM swords and learning fencing just so I can poison people with
a real weapon.
