*Old Archery thread. All info merged with new one in Topped threads*
General
Archery is one of the four weapon skills (Fencing, Maces, and Swords,
Archery). It is required to shoot Bows, Composite Bows, Crossbows, Heavy
Crossbows, Repeating Crossbows, Orcish Bows, and Slayer/Virtue Bows.
Bows and Crossbows can be made by characters that have the Bowcrafting
skill.
Orc Bows are found on Orc Scouts in the Orc Dungeon near Brittania.
Virtue/Slayer weapons are modified by Bowyers for use by Archers. All you
need is gears made by a Tinker. Virtue/Slayer weapons are found.
Archery is considered the weakest fighting skill. It's advantage is that
you can hit monsters and players without having to stand directly next to
them and getting hit back. The only other skill that allows you to do this
is magery (Note: you can use Explosion potions for ranged damage as well).
The drawbacks are the need for ammunition (arrows or bolts) and the extra
weight of that ammunition, the slow firing delay and long equip delay of
the crossbow and heavy xbow, the limited range of bolts and arrows, the
fact that you can't move until your weapon hits (or misses) it's target
(Moving stops the shot, but can be reset. Simply run 6 steps and your timer
is reset.
It's main use is on warriors fighting monsters, since archers can hunt even
heavy-hitting monsters like Balrons without getting too close.
With the return of precasting^ and the added benefit of Anatomy combined
with Evaluate Intelligence mimicking Wrestling, it makes Archer Mages once
again viable. It is a decent way to open up or finish a fight.
With the release of Ages of Shadows, Bowcrafters can now repair bows and
crossbows.
^-Precasting is a technique covered in the Magery skills section.

2 Repeating Crossbow (10-14) 41 Double Strike | 36 Moving Shot | 18
^-Damage and Speed gathered from UOStratics
Special Attacks
Like Swords, Maces, and Fencing, archery weapons have a primary and
secondary attack. These attacks are described fully in the Special Moves
page.
Skill Training
The Archery Gaining Guide will help you Grandmaster your Archery skill.
Note: The best weapon to train Archery with is a repeating crossbow (for
speed's sake). Be sure to have plenty of arrows available for training. You
will go through thousands of them.

Abandon's Guide to GM Archery....
I GM`ed Archery+Tact+Anatomy on my New mage "Abandon" On LS a week or two
ago. And now with all the posts I've seen asking about training archery I
decided to write this guide to enlighten those in need. First a few
notes.
The key to macroing * cough * I mean training Archery is the spot at which
you train a range of skills. The following are pics and discriptions of
shots of where to do this at.
Buy to 30ish
Train on harts and great harts manually until 50ish
Now, go to spot #1 and train until 70ish
Now for the home run at spot #2, spot #2 took me to GM with
ease........with no more than 35 dex
Ok, You know where to find harts and great harts? good, cause I did'nt,
just run aronud near Minoc moongate in those wooded areas and you'll be
fine. Macro off great harts of begin to gain noticably good on them, heal
them and shoot em up.
Spot #1 is Trammel Moonglow Graveyard in the pic below
Now, the reason for this spot is that obviouslly they can't get to you and
I did'nt have any trouble with creatures with magery picking me off while I
was.....afk
However sometimes one will get dragged over, or sometimes you get the
assholes that firefield rows of valuable targets just to piss you off... In
that case try another GY that does'nt have the above problems. I rode
this spot and only this spot out till 70 Archery.

Spot#2 is the Secret that I'm sure someone will Flame me for posting about,
apparently few people know about it. This spot is in Shame, 2nd level on
the coast across the mainland as you can see in the pic below. Now, Dull
copper Elementals? Beautiful things, don't cast, and have lots-o-hp

I was killed a few times by an irritated bard that dragged water elementals
over from the coast and hid, but thats the ONLY way they get to you. This
spot requires a few things to be effecient. You must, and mean must mark a
ruin for every spot in that lil cubby hole, 4 tiles I think. Only mark one
if you enjoy running from somewhere else and trying to Teleport to the spot
again and again while getting pumled by a horde of Dull Cop Ele's. Also,
sometimes because of other people macroing there, the spawn all runs away
at low life down the cave and sits there without returning, or sometimes
they all just chill out about 1 screen away, simply teleport over, engage
them all, walk over near the spot, and recall to the cubby hole. Oh, and
btw, be very polite ( heal, rez, don't drag water or air Eles, talk etc) to
other people that are in the cubbyhole with you. Otherwise you might find
yourself in the Bucs Jail, or preferably dead.

While @ this spot, use a macro that Looks something like this
TargetNext
Last Target
Attack last
Something that goes over each target and attacks it if able ( do this tram
for obvious reasons, your buddy in the cubby hole should'nt be an
attackable target eah? )
Tips: Use a bow bought from an NPC, does less damage.
For arrows? I went the bowyer huts in Skara on the mainland and just killed
off any npc that had a bow equipped, they all yeilded 40-50 arrows. But
since AoS only 1 in 4 about have them on there corpse. And no, these
NPCs do not add murder counts in anyway for some reason.
Just cast a Fire Ele and let him do all the bitch work for yea...
----------------------------------
RauneyofLS says:
post-aos, i've gone from 88.0 to 96.5 in about 2 or 3 days, shooting about
10-12k arrows, gaining about 1.0 full archery about every 1.5k arrows...not
bad! i've also gone from 103 tactics to 107.5 tactics in about 2 days
gaining with the archery...
and...
30-40 it's all about harts, great harts, mongbats, bulls, cows, ANYTHING
you can get your arrow in. best places? north of delucia, moonglow island,
britain forest, etc.
40-60 stuff at the moonglow graveyard, just where abandon said.
60-75/80 is more difficult that anything else, i fought stuff like air
elementals, water elementals, earth elementals, etc. the dulls do not seem
to work up until high seventies, it seems [at least for me]
~ GM it's all about the dull coppers, just take 2k arrows, a good
exceptional bow [nearly twice as much durability, so if you're unattended,
your bow won't break like a npc bow would halfway through your arrow stack,
and you're screwed if you're idle]
places to get arrows? archer ratmen east of compassion, they can give up to
70 per. IF you have a fencer, take him. take a war fork, and just disarm
the archers, then kill em. can make 2k+ arrows per hour...watch out for
newbies taking spawn though =/
Above GM, I have no idea.
and...
Thought this may give a bit of hope to any reds who are trying to work high
archery...I ate a +10 archery scroll nearly three days ago, and I'm already
at 100.4, just shooting drakes occasionally [I live adjacent to the daemon
temple on Fire Island]. Drakes, dragons, blood elementals, dull coppers
elementals, elder gazers, and terathan avengers work well for gains post
gm
----------------------------
poony666 says:
I moved from the gy to lizardmen in despice and they hav gained good upto
70 now..think the gains hav stopped tho.
---------------------------
Walrus says:
The repeating crossbow is godlike. It is twice as fast as the other archery
weapons(42 speed)... Makes skill gain go much quicker.
and...
Went from 30 to 52ish in like 4 hours in moonglow...
--------------------------
WonderBrick:
I had the toughest time from 24-40, but I shot everything and got through
it. I later read that archer guildmaster is in Skara. I hit the woods
around Vesper and got more feathers from chickens and birds then arrows I
shot. I plan to hit Harpy nests later when low on feathers. I also got good
gains from brown bears, timberwolves, gray wolves, black bears, then ettins
and Ogres, as my skill went up. Shoot everything to find what works and
then shoot everything again as you gain skill and alot of stuff will
suddenly give better gains, that did not before.
For the Shame lvl 2 spots, Just a word of warning, I was visited by a
friendly GM who just wanted to make sure I was at the keyboard. He then
nicely wished me a good day and left. There is no way anyone called him on
me since I was alone at the time. Stay attended.
HCI jewelry help you land more blows for more gains, without raising your
actualy Archery artificially, like Archery skill jewelry does, to make
gains slower.
-------------------------------
noki says:
Well I like to read the forums while my guy is doing archery checkin up on
his skill ever so often. I just place him in the middle of the corpser room
not in combat mode and the spawn is good enough so when they spawn they
attack me and i open fire. I started at 34ish and am at 53ish now. I may
ride this place out til 70 like i did swords. (Swords gains are same as
archery gains for stuff to hit each level) I dont care for the moonglow
spot due to the magic monsters.
---------------------------
Vicious says:
Another method I found effective over 90 is shooting the Tentacles of the
Harrower in Khaldun. Just make sure you dont shoot it with pera blow
One of the main reasons I like this method is the tentacle takes very
little damage and doesnt move, so it takes very little effort to keep your
toon gaining. You can read a book or surf websites while you do it.
--------------------------
CyberWyld says:
Alternatively you get yourself a 100% elemental dmg weapon (I use a
reapter/100% poison) and shoot the monster that's immune to that element.
I.E. Fire ele for Fire. Snow Ele for Cold, or do like me and shoot a RC
(check out the archery gain guild on the front page for the spot) with a
100% poison bow and it never dies. ) I have another method that's legal but
lengthy. If you'd like it just U2U me. Takes a little longer to set up and
you must be positive karma.
and...
Cyberwyld says:
Here's another litle tidbit that you all might be able to use. I'm getting
alot of U2U since I posted about it so I'll just put it here. This info WAS
not discovered by me. This was discovered by my GM on LS who is very good
and finding new ways to do things in UO. That being said....here's what you
do. First get yourself a character with POSITIVE karma. This is essential
for this to work. Then take your friendly neighborhood moongate to
Ilshenhar Sacrafice shrine. Head to the Meer village that is due East of
the gate, (just go straight out of the gate). Wander around until you find
a Meer Warrior and Meer Captain to follow you to the stables in the
southern part of town. Get them both into one of the stables and close the
gate with you outside. Now attack the warrior....he WILL Not retaliate due
to your positive karma, the captain will also stand there. But every 5-6
seconds the captain will cast heal on the warrior to keep him alive. If you
use a week weapon and don't try to do this unattended you can beat on the
same warrior for a very long time. If you happen to kill it or anything
goes wrong just repeat this. Good luck guys.

Ok people, no reason why an archer mage shouldn't have BOTH tactics and
anatomy. GM magery, med, eval, resist, archery, tactics, and anat being the
basic template.

What is so hard about archery for people to understand? Post-AoS, archery
has become easier [at least from what I've heard/seen/experienced]. You can
GM archery in a week or less, blowing about 20-30k arrows.
0-30 is a joke. You can buy up to thirty or right below from NPCs.

Above GM, I have no idea. And another thing, I own all chaos on LS =)
Hope this helps!

you have worked archery before and after aos, if so are the gains better
after with the repeating xbow?
