Sexism
Jade sent me a link to something in her board that relates to
something she
read at the UO.com boards. An excerpt:
I want to be able to drag the female characters around
by their hair...la
also, I think OSI should make a female character have to have GM cooking as
one of their skills...la
yep, they could even make all female characters have a macro that picks up
all the objects off the ground around the bank...la
also, if a female character is the co-owner of a house, they are locked
into the house until the male character gives his permission to
leave...la
-The Scoundrel Rico
Nice, eh? What really sets me off about is the WHOLE thread was started by
Ian Goodkninght, AND he agrees with the sentiments.
I really didn't want to get involved in that mess, but Jade had to point
out some juicy tidbits from the whole thread. Why is this important?
Because Ian is a regular here at UOPG and it's bad enough UOPG's regulars
have it bad enough reputation wise as cheaters, exploiters and hackers at
the UO.com boards. Now they can add "they are fucking Sexists!" Thank you
Ian. Fuck you too.
Let me show you my reply:
I didn't have to read past the first post to know that
thread is garbage.
I know of 7 IRL females off the top of my head that do Play UO, do PvP, and
do VERY well at it.
And I have met 5 of them IRL.
The saddest part about this whole thread is it was started by a UOPG
regular. His obvious sexist attitude goes against everything I believe in
in regards to women.
I have two daughters and grew up with my single parent mother and two
sisters. And I will tell you: my daughters and sisters are NOT just for
cooking.
A little story- A friend of mine got my baby daughter a play ironing board
with iron and vacuum cleaner for my little girl. The first words out of his
mouth when she opened them was: "now she can practice". it totally spoiled
the good mood I had watching my daughter excited over some "play house"
toys. Needless to say I don't talk to him anymore.
I tend to dissasociate myself from people with archaic, outdated and
ignorant attitudes just as this.
I recommend everyone do the same.
Hasta.
Then Jade's:
when someone said 'some girls pvp, but they suck at it"
or something, I replied with:
"Heh, that's just what the boys like to tell themselves, because they hate
getting beat by a girl
I think females have the advantage in pvp, there's just less ego involved.
I don't care if I lose, so I take more risks in a fight. I don't have that
weird mindset of the type of male pvper that seems to think penis size and
pvp skill are directly related, and that losing at pvp is a direct affront
to their manhood."
And China Lilly's: You're right about one thing. I see
many "pigs" in this thread, and I've lost respect for many that I normally
had respect for. I'm rather disgusted at the mentality of so many in this
thread regarding women and their "station" in life.
Just remember fellas. Had it not been for us lowly women, you would
either:
1. be celibate and very lonely;
2. all be married to people named "Bubba", "Sam", "Donald" and the like
3. and barefoot and pregnant chained to the sink fighting for your right
to vote and have a voice.
I'd pull up your socks now while you still can, or that just mght come to
pass
You go girls!
If I remember correctly we had a discussion months ago about girls not
being able to PvP here and I had to pull out some of Ms. Lealla's kill
shots in UO. Did I mention Lealla likes killing people sometimes? Damn
Irish redheads....
Anyway...
Let me leave you with a little
gig Ms. Jade did.
Yes, Gwen pwns you.

Hasta.

Jade is now officially my hero. that was the best thing I have ever seen in
UO, its just a shame I got to see it as an answer to a pile of sexist
commentary.
Its an RP game, whoever can be whatever. That applies to girls too. Strange
concept to some 'eh?
The 'la' fellow was clearly trolling though, so I won't put much weight on
what was said except it was in poor taste given the context.
Anyway... Jade, I love you!

Possibly worded badly, but I said "the male pvper that seems to
think...."etc
not meaning all males, meaning only the ones I described
I sure don't think I have an advantage over all male pvpers, because I get
my ass handed to me enough to know better than that.
But I do have an advantage over the ones who assume girls can't pvp, or
that 'manhood' is determined by how well you pvp (so of course girls can't
do it). So yeah, those guys, I definitely have an advantage over.

I know lots of women players. But they are generally not the pvp type. It
is ok to joke around a bit but that sounds pretty serious. I am gonna go
read the whole thread then comment.
If you don't put in your 2 cents how can you expect change?

Ok Mojo, Nieves is making me do this.
Am I a Girl ?.... yeppers. Do I PVP ?... yes. Am i good at it?... I win
some I lose some (win more when someone gets my Irish up). Do I need pvp
to feed my ego?.... Hell no.
I don't keep photos of every kill only ones that will become a story.

~Chuckle~
All I can say is that this thread is giving the guy exactly what he wanted
, which is to ruffle the feathers of all the women who reads the thread
.
It was obviously said in levity and as some might see it in bad taste , I
see it as ppl being able to laugh at themselves and the outdated
stereotypes that many standup comedians have made very lucrative careers
poking fun at.
Ask yourself this , how many threads have gone without such a martyr as
jade that degrade and flame men ? When a man is called a pig or a dog it is
laughed off , yet when a woman is told to be a housewife or called a bitch
then the entire ERA reunion squad desends upon the poor fool.
The white male is now one of the largest minority in this country , do'nt
think so ? Try being a working white male in this country and watch the
other races and women get the finacial aid/services from the gov your
denied because there simply are'nt any programs out there for honest
working white men . Yet any female/minority other than white males can
aquirre any number of services to aid them in thier lives . I'm sure i'll
be flamed for this but if anyone denies these facts i implore you to search
the web for a white college fund , you wont find them because such a fund
would be considered racist and unfair . Yet there's negro college funds ,
latino....funds esp for women...funds for ethic women ..the list goes on
and on.
As a disclaimer and a fact i will state that i am FAR from a racist or
biggot , however i do not now or have i ever started a war...owned a
ecologically polluting company...owned a slave...degraded a female...or
been a wife beater....nor do i own a pickup with a gun rack. My question is
, when will I stop being punished for these generalsations about me and my
kind ? Where is my martyr ? Think about this post and then tell me agian
how hard it is to be a woman in uo .
The prospective father-in-law asked, "Young man, can you support a
family?"
The surprised groom-to-be replied, "Well, no. I was just planning to
support
your daughter. The rest of you will have to fend for yourselves."

Who said it was hard to be a woman in UO?
Plenty of us enjoy it, pay for it, and play it regularly.
My question has been, why do we suddenly need a teenage boy to tell us what
we should 'enjoy' in it? That it's not logical for us to want to roleplay
warrior-type characters because women aren't warriors.
I just think his whole premis for the thread was silly and condescending.
The very idea that women and men can't possibly enjoy the same things in a
fantasy game, and therefore need separate game features developed for them
is stupid, and proven incorrect by the history of the game and it's mix of
male and female players who have stuck with it for years.
Who the hell wants to roleplay 'girl things' like doing the dishes?

No you dont need to be reminded of it , however perhaps if other women
would remember how it made them feel being "reminded" of these stereotypes
then the men=dog observation would begin to dissapate as well . Never said
any of what he said held water , what i did attempt to point out however is
how if this post was on the other foot noone would bat an eyelash ..and

Sort of adding on to fever pitch...
A board game entitled "101 Uses for a Severed Penis" is considered amusing
but Jack the Ripper's removal of women's uteri is not the stuff of comedy.
The movie "It Couldn't Happen to a Nicer Guy" is a comedy about a man being
raped at gunpoint. Similar exploitation of deliberate violence against
women would never be tolerated, and will attract the attention of various
law-enforcement professionals. Even rude speech can be considered a
hate-crime. Against this backdrop of serious efforts to protect women from
even the most trivial offenses, violence against men is ignored, excused,
trivialized, exploited, laughed at, and even advocated.
I agree that this guy's sexist post was wrong, but im just throwing out
this stuff to liven up the discussion. And I'm sure if someone made a
sexist comment about men in uo then there would be no such commotion at
all.
quote: "I think females have the advantage in pvp, there's just less ego

Isn't that sexist?? I guess I'm not good enough to pvp because I have a
penis and I will go all ego-psycho man-crazy when i fight.

It's not "wrong" to express your views.
And it would be boring as hell if those views were the same for everyone.

Nieves the entire point of my post is that it has not been brought up . It
is an inescapeable fact that male bashing is rampant and it's Hypocrytical
to talk about one and not the other . I never said that jade was a
hypocrite so please do not put words in my mouth or text into my page .
You brought it to UOPG and placed it on the front page for everyone to see
. Did i flame anyone ? Did i spam obscenely ? No , so simply because i did
not chime in with a "Yeah that's right get um' jade" post dont come down on
me as if i am some sort of fanatic . I simply pointed out the flipside of
the situation and how it would have easily gone unnoticed if i had'nt .
You say that the entire thread was wrong . Who are you to judge this man's

everyone's words are free in this country and he did not single anyone out
nor did he commit any sort of civix or criminal deviance , so your opinon
is yours to have as is his own , but in the grand scheme by the same right
you have to say his posting was wrong , he has the right to compose and
post it .You fancy yourself a journalist of in some form or another ,
however whenever your opinon is opposed you immediately shut the door on
the viewpoint . Journalisim requires a biased viewpoint in all stories and
an ablity to see both sides of any situation . So be the journalist your
thought to be and reread my post , then tell me i was wrong to post it
...and if you can then i would suggest finding another line of work ,
because your biased by personal relationships and or feelings toward the
ppl or persons involved .
There is a fine line between journalisim and propaganda

Krynn this is mostly directed at you but I use Jades post to prove my
point.
quote: "Yeah, not sure what the original poster meant by "things women
would enjoy" when he was talking about development of the game.
Is he claiming to have some knowledge about what females enjoy in a game
(that apparently all the female players do not have, and have been
unknowingly enjoying a game they're not supposed to)?
I guess we are pretty stupid huh? We didn't even know we didn't enjoy UO as
it already is"
Perhaps some wood to feed the fire on my previous post, Ian isnt being
sexist , AT ALL, this is just an over-reaction to any comment anyone says
about women. Proving that society will react to a huge degree if anything
(potentialy) negative about women is said, but where is the defense for
men?? No one is complaining that he assumes all men want the same thing.
What Ian said was "Okay, the debate on this one is, do you think that OSI
goes more for adding things in that men would enjoy then what women would
want? If so, then why do you think that..... And if you think they don't,
then why do you think that......"
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THIS ISNT A GIANT ASS CONSPIRACY TO OPPRESS WOMEN! Know
why no men are complaining on these threads that this guy is "assuming what
men want" because HE ISNT, he doesnt claim to have any knowledege about
women. He never says all women don't know why they enjoy the game, he
treats men and women as exact equals in his post. WHERE THE HELL DOES HE
SAY WOMEN ARE STUPID? OH WAIT, HE DOESNT.
As Ian said you are jumping from A to C and skipping B altogether its like
someone asking if you want them to grab something for you at the store
while they are out and you going " OH SO YOUR SAYING ALL WOMEN ARE TOO LAZY
AND TOO STUPID TO GO TO THE STORE AND BUY SOMETHING!!", I could go through
and make some more arguments for Ian but he hasn't done half bad himself.
The point of this post is the fact that Ian shouldn't be taking any blame
because his post isnt sexist at all.
Jade even if your comment wasn't intended to be sexist it sure came out
taht way and many of the posts on that thread by women are also sexist, its
a shame that no one is on the front page of any websites complaining about
how men are being oppressed or whatever is happening to women in this
thread.

quote: its a shame that no one is on the front page of any websites

The thread wasn't started by a girl asking for features to be added for the
poor men who are misrepresented by being able to roleplay powerful fantasy
characters that are unbelievable since there was no 'significant men roles'
in medieval times to justify them. If it had been, I probably still would
have posted something, but obviously not a "just a girl" flash with a bunch
of my victim's corpses. I found Ian's original post, and his later replies
defending it, to be condescending.
But I kept it (to me anyway) lighthearted, I made a joke type of flash, and
it probably still is lighthearted thing. I introduced the flash with "I
put together a little slideshow of some shots from a few of my stories.
Yeah, every once in awhile I put down the knitting needles, dump the apron
in the trash, and go outside for a little murder and mayhem "
*shrugs*
But there's always gotta be some ass who wants to jump in and say
"Oh you women are just too damn sensitive, quit
your whining, blah blah blah men are oppressed too and blah blah blah and
there's children starving in Africa and blah blah so it's perfectly okay
that a bunch of people started making unfunny sexist comments on the uo.com
boards because white guys have it rough too and blah blah" So, why bother
with all of the examples of other oppressed people? Is your mantra, then,
"THEY HATE US SO WE HATE THEM - SPREAD THE HATE"?
I mean really, what's your fucking point? That since men are so oppressed,
it's okay to say this shit about women too, as long as you add a ...la to
the end of it?
I'm a female. I saw a post that I thought was condescending, and I made a
lighthearded flash slideshow in reply, and posted it on my front page. If
you're an oppressed male, get a website and post a huge fucking article
about how oppressed you are. I don't care I won't come
and tell you not to post it, or pat you on the ass and tell you 'now now
dear, they were just teasing. don't you worry your pretty little head
about it'.

Fever...though I must admit I concur with some of your statements about
bias shifting more towards the "white" male...I have to ask....what the
hell does this have to do with UO? so you can't get college money or a good
job or financial aid or whatever.... it doesn't have anything to do with
UO, which is the current forum for sexism that this post is discussing.
As far as my opinion towards female players in UO, it's the same as my
opinion of the female roleplayers I've gamed with tabletop in the 21 yrs I
been rping females are by and large in my experience better gaming
companions. They tend to immerse themselves farther into the game, instead
of being rules lawyers, or uber item hoarders. But as in any situation
results vary, people are people: not a sex, skin color, religion or any
other grouping people like to use, everybody is the sum of their parts.

You are absolutely right. And I have the right to post it here at UOPG and
to point out the morally wrong outlook of it.
I bet you are one of those that say: "Hey terrorists have rights too?" Did
I go to far? Maybe. There is a point in society when you have to say,
enough is enough. And that's why I am starting to appreciate portions of
the conservative mindset. Let me give you an example, and I might get
flamed or hated for this, but since we are on the topic of opinions and
it's ok to express them, so be it.
Homosexuality-Don't agree with it. It's wrong. And I don't mean in a
biblical sort of way, but also in nature. Can two like sexual human beings
have children together naturally? No. Was the booty hole meant to have
something stuck in it? No. (Doctor's suck BTW). It's an exit only place
and should stay that way. Now, will I run around screaming "FAGS AND DYKES
SUCK! DOWN WITH THEM!" No. If people want to live that way, fine, they
can. It's their right too. But don't profess to me the "it's right to be
this way! I should've been X gender and not Y!" And will I discriminate
against them? Newp. One of my best friends on this whole world was gay
and I treated her with the utmost respect. We hung out, partied, and even
spun discs together. I work with 3 gay co workers and a gay person takes
care of my children at day care. They don't impose my beliefs on me and
mine, I don't on them. Life is good that way. You can live and work
together without actually being a bitch to each other. What does this have
to do with the entire point of this discussion? Somethings should be
thought out before posting. The ramifications of what I just said above
could've lost me some respect with some homosexual players in the UO
Community (and there are some out there, believe that). Do I care? No.
Because I am making a stand and I won't backtrack from it as Ian tried too.
I think about what I have to say and to hell with what others think.
[You fancy yourself a journalist of in some form or another , ]
You have me confused with Rush Limbaugh or Mr. Jennings or something.
I am a guy with a bit of webspace and a host where I can post my opinions
about things that happen in the gaming world. Mainly it's about UO but
sometimes something will get my interest and throw it up. Had I been a
real journalist, I would've interviewed both sides of the issues, presented
it, then tried to be bias. I don't have to be biased. I am not some
recognized news agency. I am Nieves of UOPowergamers.com. I do and say
what I want. And want to know something? You can too.
[however whenever your opinon is opposed you immediately shut the door on
the viewpoint .]
Wrong. If I would've done that, this thread would've been locked and your
ability to reply to it would've been removed. It's ok to agree to disagree
and move on. And I won't hate you for it.
[Journalisim requires a biased viewpoint in all stories and an ablity to
see both sides of any situation .]
I try very hard to be fair and just but, as I said, somethings cross the
line and require me to take a stand. And I don't think there is anyone
that can dispute that.
Gawd I wish I had more time but I don't. Let me cover two more point:
[There is a fine line between journalisim and propaganda ]
I am not a propagandist. I already explained what I am. Every read the
drudge report? I am nowhere near as good as he is, but I think you get the
point...
[ Yet there's negro college funds , latino....funds esp for women...funds
for ethic women ..the list goes on and on. ]
There are also organizations that go out of there way to oppress others
right's and will 'help' those that they feel oppressed.
Personally, I think the NAACP, Farakhan, KKK, and other like organizations
fucking suck. When Bush made his stand for those Michigan college
students, I almost jumped out of my seat and cheered. It's about time
America woke the fuck up and realized achievement should be based on merit.
Not on numbers, race, or what have you. I am a Puerto Rican man (as I h
ave said MANY TIMES), and don't think I don't see statements by women or
see pictures women have up of 1/2 naked men in their offices. Is it wrong?
Fuck yeah. Do I sweat it throughout the day (OH THAT"S NOT FAIR! I WANT
PICTURES OF GWEN STEFANI UP!). No. That's stupid. And you are focusing
on stupid arguements you know you can't win. Do the right thing within
YOURSELF and hope you can influence others to do the same (the right
comments got that picture taken down). Granted there should be laws that
protect people's right. There is always one asshoe that will try to act
like a dick and discriminate wrongly (yes there proper times to
discriminate: a person in a wheel chair could not be in the Army for
obvious reasons). And when those things occur you take action. But if
there is an all woman, black, or white workforce in an organization, so
fucking what. But those organizations should NOT shut themselves down when
someone wants to join in and do some work too. Nor should it be made
difficult for them.
One last thought: stereotypes are based on truth. But judge me as a person
first before applying any type of stereotype.
Have a good day folks.
Hasta.
Most people aren't stupid. They are just uninformed idiots.
