UO Week in Review--30 July 2006

Now with MarkeeDragon firmly in control of this site, things will be a bit less hazy around here. Unfortunately, we can't say the same for UO, since there is still no word about the Big Announcement. The delay is not the fault of the Dev team, but of their bosses. In the meantime, we will learn this coming week what the veteran rewards will be as well as get a glimpse of the new tile sets for your home decorating pleasure. Anything, however, is better than the "very soon" "it's way below our radar" "please be patient" "in the near future" "the timetable has not been determined" montage that we have endured for the past several weeks. This week's topics:

  • Ophidians Capture Redwood (along with Vesper and Papua).
  • Tile Sets and Vet Rewards to be Revealed.

Ophidians On the March!

Enraged by the theft of their prized artifact, the Ophidians mustered outside of their temple in the Lost Lands desert. Here they organized in a highly militaristic fashion, delineating themselves according to rank. The strongest were assigned the rank of General, all the way down to the Recruits who could barely hold a spear. This army was commanded by an ophidian known as a Brood Queen, who was protected by her special guard, the Beserkers. After sending scouts on a suicide mission to reconnoiter Britannia, they formulated then launched their assault. They first overwhelmed the tropical outpost of Papua, then marched south across the jungle to the entrance to Vesper's graveyard. From there they flooded across the southern bridge to the city itself...

Good story, eh? Anyway, well, we knew at some point there would be town invasions. This time we have ophidians in Vesper and Papua (Trammel). The action started Friday night when they took down all of the shards, turned off the anti-summons prohibition, and installed ophidians each with military rank. We have Recruits, Specialists, Corporals, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captains, Majors and Generals. In addition, we have Healers (hint: kill the healers before the generals) and Beserkers, which are a bitch to kill.

The invasion works much the same way like the Despise/Britain invasion, where you can start clearing the spawn and the spawn returns in waves, each successive wave being harder until you are faced with the beserkers. After the beserkers are defeated there is a lull then the entire cycle begins again.

For a treat, the beserkers have a chance to drop major artifacts. Unfortunately, these artifacts are cursed meaning that they are uninsurable and will drop with your corpse if you die. They will also drop minor artifacts, but these won't be cursed. There are also drops of "Vanquishing" and "Mystic" weapons, the Mystic weapons having some impact on the beserkers.

It's still filler, but it's good that they were able to throw something together while they wait for the suits to give them the green light to make the Big Announcement. [Yes, I am tired of typing 'Big Announcement;' does it show?]

The Dark and Crystal Tile Sets, Along with Vet Rewards

Well, actually the new tile sets will be called crystal and shadow, but I can't resist a good movie pun. I guess the crystal will look a bit like the Prism of Light interior, and the Shadow will look like the buildings of Umbra, but we'll see for certain this coming week.

Also this week will be revealed the new Vet rewards. They did state back in March that there will be rewards for 6th, 7th and 8th year vets along with a few more rewards for the 1st and 2nd years. I hope the rewards are mostly decorative in nature, with probably ethereal ridables for the 1st and 2nd year folks. The last thing we need is another game disbalancing item only vets can get and use.

I want a sarcophagus, please give me a sarcophagus.

I think that'll be it for now. If anything Big happens, we'll let you know.

Tymaron,

Let me be one to personally thank you for continuing to post news on UOPG. It's appreciated.

Hasta.
